Your Ultimate Guide to Vaping

It’s natural for nicotine consumers to question vaping, from how vaping devices work to choosing the right e-liquid and how to vape properly.

In this guide, we’ll cover everything about vaping and how to vape, from the simple steps to some of the ways you can tailor your experience. Explore our guide to vaping here to learn what you need to know.

What is vaping?

Vaping is an electrical alternative to other nicotine consumption methods, like smoking cigarettes or using nicotine pouches*. Vaping is possible with an electronic device, like a Ten Motives e-cigarette or Vuse vape. These devices use heat to change a nicotine-containing e-liquid into an inhalable vapour.

Vaping has increased in popularity compared to smoking cigarettes. Many nicotine consumers prefer vaping to smoking, which provides nicotine without tobacco, burning, smoke or ash.

What is an e-cigarette?

E-cigarettes (electronic cigarettes), or ‘e-cigs’, are the same as vapes. Some e-cigs look more like traditional cigarettes, while others are larger and longer. Both e-cigarettes and vapes use heat to transform e-liquid into inhalable vapour.

Vapes and e-cigarettes include many devices with unique features, and e-liquids in various nicotine strengths and flavours, with options for different nicotine consumers.

How does a vape work?

What are vapes made of? And how do they work? Vapes contain a battery, a heating element, and a nicotine-containing substance (usually e-liquid or nicotine salts).

When activated (by drawing on the mouthpiece or pressing a button), the battery sends power to the heating element. When the right temperature is reached, the heat transforms e-liquid into vapour, ready to be inhaled.

Is vaping safe?

Vaping can provide nicotine without tobacco, fire or smoke. Choosing a vape over cigarettes means consumers can avoid the byproducts of tobacco smoke, including carbon monoxide and tar.

E-liquids are tobacco-free, which means vapers can also avoid the health risks of this ingredient*.

How to vape properly

Your vaping experience can differ based on your device, the e-liquid you choose and the way you inhale the vapour. There are two common vaping styles: mouth-to-lung (MTL) and direct-to-lung (DTL).

Mouth-to-lung (MTL)

Mouth-to-lung vaping involves drawing vapour into your mouth and holding it, then taking a deep breath into your lungs and exhaling. MTL vaping is often described as being most similar to smoking a cigarette.

Direct lung (DTL)

Direct-to-lung vaping means moving the vapour directly into your lungs without pausing to hold it in your mouth – like taking a normal breath. This is followed by a quick exhale.

The different types of vapes and e-cigarettes

Whatever device you choose, vapes and e-cigarettes contain e-liquid and some of the same ingredients. But there are options when it comes to vape devices. Each has features that may be more suited to specific nicotine consumers.

Vape pens and pod vapes

Pen and pod vapes are closed-system devices, including Vuse ePens and Vuse ePods. These devices are easy to use (activate and inhale to vape) and refill, with neat e-liquid cartridges available in different nicotine strengths and flavours.

Disposable vapes

Disposable vapes are a type of closed-system vape that can’t be refilled or recharged – they should be disposed of responsibly when they run out of puffs. Disposable vapes and e-cigarettes are available in various flavours.

Vape starter kits

If you’re a nicotine consumer transitioning to vaping or want to try a different device, vape starter kits include everything you need. Explore vape device starter kits to find an option that suits you.

E-liquids

E-liquid (vape liquid or vape juice) is a nicotine-containing substance that turns into inhalable vapour when heated. It contains a pharmaceutical-grade nicotine polymer and other ingredients, like sweeteners and flavourings. You can buy e-liquid refills in different nicotine strengths and flavours to tailor your vaping experience.

How to empty a vape tank

You shouldn’t need to empty out a vape tank. As you vape, e-liquid runs down until the tank or cartridge is almost empty. If your tank or cartridge is running low or you notice a burnt taste, it’s time to refill.

How to refill a vape

If you have a closed-system vaping device, like a pod or pen vape, loading new e-liquid is easy. Click out the empty cartridge and replace it with a new one to continue vaping.

Open-system vapes should be refilled manually. For tank vapes, carefully refill the e-liquid from a small refill bottle.

How to dispose of vapes

Vape devices should be disposed of responsibly. But how do you recycle vapes?

Take them to your local recycling centre (in the bin for electricals and batteries).

Drop them in a recycling bank at a supermarket or roadside area (in the bin for electrical recycling).

Pen, pod and tank vapes are designed to be refilled and recharged, so you won’t need to worry about disposing of your vape if you choose one of these devices.

Disposable vapes run out in time and must be disposed of responsibly in electrical recycling.
